Our flat-sided oval tube offers excellent strength integrity. The flat sides enable easy installation when used for railings or balustrades and is a space-efficient alternative to round tubing when used within machinery or automotive applications.

The smooth, rounded lines combined with the flat-sided profile create impressive strength, making this an advantageous option for architects and designers (read more about our architectural tubing). In fact, our carefully controlled ‘deflection’ tests have shown that this stainless steel (inox) tube profile is up to 54% stronger than standard round steel tubing, making it one of our strongest shaped tubes (alongside the radius square profile).
The flat side also means it is very easy for fabricators and fitters to fix the tubing securely to other elements, which is especially beneficial in architecture and infrastructure (our flat-sided oval tubing was the tube chosen to be used as handrail at the top of the iconic Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, in fact). The rounded edge offers simple maintenance, which is why flat-sided oval tube is so often used in medical and manufacturing industries because water and dirt cleans easily from the contoured profile.
Stainless steel and aluminium 5083 flat-sided oval tube profiles are sold in lengths of 5.7m (the manufacturing process reduces the standard 6m length by 0.3 metres).
Can’t see the tube sizes you need in the table? Contact us about custom-sized tubing; we may able to adjust our tooling settings to fabricate a new size to meet your project requirements (often the only additional costs that you will incur are a nominal set-up fee and material used). If you need sizes for other metals including aluminium and brass, download our brochure PDF, which contains additional sizing information.
Upon request, we will be able to find out wall thickness tolerances from our metal suppliers. Typically the tolerance levels of wall thickness are extremely minimal and any small variations in thickness do not affect further fabrication or the end application. However, it is important to let us know if the tolerance is critical to the application before you place an order. For example, if the shaped tubing component needs to go inside another component, or if the tubing has to house a component, any variation in wall thickness could be critical.
The slim profile of our flat-sided oval tube is becoming increasingly popular with design engineers, who are able to improve their product design by using this flattened shape. It is ideal for automotive applications such as exhausts and engines, which require a compact profile for clearance reasons. It can neatly house cabling and electronics. The flat side can be used to mount other components.
We offer this shape in a wide range of sizes, but if we do not make the tube in a size you require then please ask because we can customise our tooling to make new sizes. If you need a prototype or a small run of flat-sided tubing, our minimum order quantity is just 1 length.
This unique profile is used across so many practical applications, making it popular with design engineers and product designers. We regularly manipulate flat-sided oval tubing for various applications on behalf of our clients, providing services such as flaring and welding. Our engineers can also bend sections of this oval tubing if you require – either by ‘rolling’ sweeping arcs into the formed tube, or by using tooling to produce tighter, ‘fixed radius’ bends.
Our clients come to us from across the globe for our unique shaped tubing and specialist tube fabrication. We can ship D-shaped tube to North America and Europe in as little as 48 hours. Our expert shipping team will meet your transit times and budget; get in touch to discuss transportation options.
